Freelancer or agency for your website in Dubai: an honest comparison

Web and WordPress9 min readPublished 2026-10-10Updated 2026-10-10

A freelancer is often right for a simple site on a tight budget; an agency or studio suits larger builds that need several skills and ongoing support. Per Cubix, freelancers charge roughly AED 75 to 250 an hour and agency retainers AED 6,000 to 18,000 a month. Our fixed-price sites start from AED 3,950, excluding VAT.

You have two quotes. One is from a freelancer a friend recommended, and it is a fraction of the other, from an agency with an office and a sales team. Both promise the same website. You cannot tell what the price gap actually buys, and neither of them has an interest in telling you the truth if the other is the better fit.

Short answer: it depends on the job, not on the label

A good freelancer beats a bad agency, and the other way round. The label tells you little. What matters is how big the job is, how many skills it needs, who is responsible if something breaks, and how long you will need support.

We are a studio, so we have an interest. We will say clearly where a freelancer is the better choice for you, because sending you to the wrong supplier helps nobody.

What each option costs in the UAE

Prices vary widely, and published numbers mostly come from agency blogs, so treat them as ranges. According to Cubix, a Dubai software firm, freelancers charge roughly AED 75 to 250 per hour and agency retainers run about AED 6,000 to 18,000 a month. The same sources put a small-business website at about AED 3,500 to 15,000 and e-commerce at AED 8,000 to 150,000 and above, depending on scope.

For comparison, our own fixed prices, excluding 5% VAT, start from AED 3,950 for a WordPress business site (typical range to 12,000), AED 4,950 for a Shopify launch store (typical range to 12,000), and AED 3,450 for a Shopify setup package. Those are ours, not market figures.

When a freelancer is the right choice

  • You need a simple site with a few pages and no special features.
  • Your budget is under what a studio can build properly.
  • You have a clear brief, and you can supply the text and photos.
  • You are comfortable managing the project yourself.
  • You need a quick, small fix, such as a form, a banner or a plugin issue.

A freelancer who works directly with you can be fast and flexible, and you pay no overhead. Many good ones are cheaper than any studio, and for the right job that is simply better value.

When a studio or agency is the better choice

  • The job needs design, development, copy, payments and set-up of other tools together.
  • You are selling online and checkout, tax and delivery must work from day one.
  • You need Arabic right-to-left layout, integrations or custom features.
  • You want one team that stays after launch, with care plans and backup cover.
  • The site matters to revenue, so a delay or outage costs you money.

The main thing a team gives you is cover. If one person is ill, leaves or is busy on another project, someone else knows your site. That is hard to get from a one-person business, and it is often the thing that matters most two years after launch.

The real risks, on both sides

Risks with freelancers

  • They go quiet or take another full-time job, and you cannot reach them for a change.
  • They hold your accounts. We have heard of owners who could not get into their own hosting or domain.
  • Quality depends entirely on one person's range. A great designer may be weak at security or speed.

Risks with agencies

  • A strong pitch from a senior person, then the work goes to a junior.
  • Vague scope that grows through paid change requests.
  • Long contracts and monthly fees for things you do not need.
  • Pricing that hides what you are paying for.

Neither list is a reason to avoid a type of supplier. It is a list of things to ask about, whoever you choose.

Ten questions to ask either one

  1. Who exactly will do the work, and can I meet them?
  2. Can you show live sites you built, and can I speak to the owner?
  3. Will the domain, hosting, store account and code be in my name?
  4. What is the fixed price, and what is not included?
  5. What is the payment schedule? Beware of paying everything upfront.
  6. What happens if something breaks after launch? How long is the fix window?
  7. Who maintains the site, and what does it cost per month?
  8. Can I edit the content myself without calling you?
  9. How will you handle Arabic, mobile and VAT-inclusive prices if I need them?
  10. What do you need from me, and by when?

Honest answers to these matter more than the size of the office. Be careful with anyone who will not give a written scope or who avoids the ownership question.

What we do, so you can compare fairly

For reference, this is how we handle the points above. Use it as a yardstick, even if you do not hire us.

  • You own the accounts, code and domain from day one.
  • Fixed price after a short call. Under AED 20,000 it is 50% to start and 50% at launch; above that, 30%, 40% and 30%.
  • A 30-day window after launch to fix anything that does not work as agreed.
  • Care plans from AED 395 a month, or WordPress care from AED 295 a month, if you want us to keep the site healthy.
  • A written scope with change requests priced before work starts.

Why the cheapest quote is not always the cheapest

A low quote can cost more in the end if the scope is thin. Look at what is missing: no mobile testing, no Arabic, no payment setup, no training, no backups, no fix window. Each missing item either costs you later or does not get done. Put quotes side by side on the same list of features, and ask each supplier to price the gaps.

The same goes for the high quote. Ask what the extra money buys, such as senior time, a second person checking the work, or support after launch. If the answer is vague, it may be overhead.

A middle route: freelancer first, studio later

Many owners start with a freelancer for a first simple site, then move to a studio when the business grows and the site starts to matter more. That is a sensible path, with one condition: insist on owning your accounts and getting a handover note, so the move later is easy.

You can also use a freelancer for content and a studio for the build, or the reverse. Mixing is fine, as long as someone owns the whole result.

When we are not the right fit

If you need a five-page brochure site for under AED 2,500 and you have the content ready, a good freelancer will likely serve you better and cheaper than we can. If you want a site built in a few days with no brief, we are not your supplier either. We are the right fit when the site must work as part of how you sell or serve customers, and you want a fixed price and a team behind it.
