Shopify vs Wix for a UAE business: an honest comparison

Shopify8 min readPublished 2026-10-10Updated 2026-10-10

Wix is enough for a small brochure site, a booking page or a store with a few dozen products. Shopify is the better choice when selling is the business: many products, variants, discounts, marketplaces and growth. A Shopify launch store with us starts from AED 4,950, excluding 5% VAT.

You have a friend on Wix who built a nice site in a weekend, and an agency telling you that you need Shopify. One of them is overselling. Which one depends on what you plan to sell, how many products you have and how much you expect to grow.

Start with what you are building

Wix and Shopify are both website builders. They started in different places. Wix began as a drag-and-drop builder for any kind of site and added a store. Shopify began as a store and added more ways to build pages. That history shapes where each is strong.

So the first question is not which is better. It is what you are building. A site where selling is a side feature suits Wix well. A business where the store is the business suits Shopify.

When Wix is enough

We build on Shopify, so you could expect us to say Shopify every time. We will not. Wix is a fair choice in these cases:

  • A brochure site for a consultant, clinic, studio or small service company.
  • A booking page for a handful of services.
  • A small store with a few dozen products and simple options.
  • A side project or a first test, where you want to spend little and learn.
  • A site you will edit yourself and never want to ask anyone to touch.

If this is you, spend your money on photos, copy and a clear page, not on a bigger platform. A cheaper tool used well beats an expensive tool used badly.

When Shopify is the better choice

  • You have hundreds of products, or products with many sizes, colours and options.
  • Selling is your main income, not a side line.
  • You want to sell on Instagram, TikTok, Google and marketplaces from one product list.
  • You need discount rules, bundles, gift cards, subscriptions or wholesale pricing.
  • You want staff to manage orders, stock and returns without a developer.
  • You plan to grow into new markets, currencies and languages.
  • You expect to hire an agency later and want a platform that has a large pool of specialists.

✓ Platform features, UAE payment options and pricing change often. Checked October 2026. Confirm on Wix's and Shopify's own pricing pages before you buy.

Payments in the UAE

This is where owners get surprised. Your payment gateway decides which cards, wallets and buy-now-pay-later options a customer sees, and the available choices differ by platform and by country. On both Wix and Shopify, check which UAE gateways are supported for your business type and what each charges. Tabby and Tamara are popular with UAE shoppers; see our guide to Tabby and Tamara on Shopify.

Do not pick a platform before you have confirmed that your preferred gateway and wallets work on it. Ask the provider in writing.

Arabic and right-to-left

If you need Arabic, the language is only the start. The layout must mirror: menus, product grids, forms and icons flip direction. Both platforms can support this, but the quality varies by theme or template. Whatever you choose, test it on a phone with real Arabic text before you commit. For the cost side, see our guide to the Shopify Arabic store.

Cost: what you pay

A Wix plan and a Shopify plan are each a monthly fee that depends on the tier you pick. Shopify also charges payment fees, and adds a fee on top if you use an outside gateway. Wix has its own payment costs. Neither is free, and the headline plan price is rarely the total. Our guide to Shopify fees in the UAE walks through the Shopify side.

On top of platform costs, you may pay for the build. Our prices are below, excluding 5% VAT.

OptionOur price (AED)Typical time
Shopify setup package, premium theme, single brandFrom 3,4502 to 3 weeks
Shopify launch storeFrom 4,950 (typical 4,950 to 12,000)3 to 4 weeks
Custom Shopify themeFrom 14,500 (typical to 27,500)6 to 8 weeks
WixWe do not sell Wix buildsBuild it yourself or use a Wix specialist

Your total cost should be compared over two to three years, not the first month. A cheaper plan that forces a rebuild in 18 months is not cheaper.

The risk with outgrowing a builder

The common story is simple. A brand starts on a builder, grows, and hits limits: a catalogue too big, shipping rules too tricky, speed too slow or a need for a feature that does not exist. Then it moves platform. That move costs money and some Google traffic. Our Shopify migration SEO checklist shows what it takes.

That is not a reason to start on Shopify every time. It is a reason to ask honestly where you will be in two years. If the answer is a store with hundreds of products and several sales channels, start on Shopify. If the answer is the same small site, stay on Wix.

If you are comparing more than these two, our posts on WordPress vs Shopify and Shopify vs Salla cover the other common choices. For a taste of how a UAE storefront with Arabic looks, see the Oud Atelier design study.

Selling beyond your own website

Many UAE brands sell through Instagram, WhatsApp and Google Shopping as much as through their site. This is where platform choice starts to bite. Shopify has a large set of sales channel connections, so a product list in one place can feed several shop fronts. Wix has some connections too, but the range is smaller. Check which channels you need and whether each one is supported, since support changes over time.

If you plan to sell mostly by WhatsApp message with a simple payment link, you may not need a full store at all. In that case a clean Wix page with a catalogue and a WhatsApp button can do the job for months.

Speed, support and who looks after it

Both platforms host the site for you, so you do not manage servers or security patches. That is a real advantage over WordPress, covered in our WordPress vs Shopify guide. Speed depends more on how many images, apps and scripts you add than on the platform name. A Wix site with huge images can be slower than a lean Shopify store, and the opposite is just as true.

Support is a second question. Ask who you call when a payment fails at 9pm. Both platforms have help centres, and agencies like us can support Shopify stores. For Wix, check the support options on the current plan.

What we would do

Ask three questions. How many products will you have in a year? Will you sell outside your own website? Do you need Arabic done properly? If any answer is a lot, yes or yes, choose Shopify. If all three are no, start on Wix or a simple WordPress site and save your budget for marketing.

We would rather tell you that now than sell you a bigger platform than you need.

Questions

For a growing store, usually yes. For a brochure site or a small store of a few dozen products, Wix is often enough and cheaper to run. It depends on what you are building.

It can work for small stores. Check that your payment gateway, wallets and delivery options are supported before you commit, and test Arabic layout on a phone.

Yes, but it is a migration. Products and customers can be exported, the design is rebuilt and old URLs need 301 redirects to protect your Google traffic.

Wix is often cheaper to start. Over two to three years the answer depends on payment fees, apps and whether you outgrow it. Check both pricing pages for current plans.

Both can do Arabic and right-to-left layouts. The result depends on the template or theme and on testing with real Arabic text, not on the platform name.

Our setup package starts from AED 3,450 and a launch store from AED 4,950, excluding 5% VAT. Shopify's monthly plan and app costs are paid on top.
