Custom Shopify theme vs premium theme

Shopify7 min readPublished 2026-10-02Updated 2026-10-02

A premium Shopify theme costs roughly AED 350 to 1,100 plus configuration and suits most stores under a few hundred products. A custom theme starts at AED 14,500 with us and wins when your brand, catalogue or checkout flow does not fit a template, or when app costs and speed matter.

A founder sent us two links: a premium theme with the right colours, and a competitor's store she wanted to beat. Both used the same theme. The question was whether to pay for something different.

What the two options actually are

A premium theme is a finished template sold once to thousands of stores. You pay a licence fee, then configure colours, sections and content. A custom theme is built for one brand: its layout, product page logic, cart behaviour and sections are designed and coded around what you sell.

There is also a middle route: a premium theme with real development on top, such as new sections and a rebuilt product page. It is not a different category, but it is where many good projects land.

The real comparison is total cost over two or three years, not the build price. A premium theme that needs eight paid apps for bundles, size guides and upsells can cost more per month than a custom theme that has those features in the code.

Performance

Speed on mobile decides how many visitors see your product page at all. Premium themes are built to serve many merchants, so they ship features you will never switch on. Apps add scripts of their own.

A custom theme loads only what your store needs. That is an advantage, not a guarantee: a badly built custom theme can be slower than a clean premium one. Ask any agency how they measure speed, and have them show you a real report from a store they built.

Maintenance and risk

With a premium theme, the vendor fixes bugs and adds features, but you inherit their choices and their pace. If the vendor stops supporting the theme, you are stuck.

With a custom theme, you or your agency own maintenance. That is a cost, so factor in a care plan (ours start at AED 395 a month), but you also decide what changes and when. You should receive the full source in a repository you own, not a locked package.

When a premium theme wins

  • You are launching, testing demand, and have a small or simple catalogue.
  • Budget is tight and speed to market matters more than distinction.
  • Your brand is clear but not layout-dependent; a clean template does the job.
  • You are comfortable editing sections in the theme editor yourself.

When a custom theme wins

  • Your brand is the product: luxury, fragrance, jewellery, fashion where presentation sells.
  • You need a product page that does something templates cannot, such as configuring, bundling or gifting flows.
  • You need true Arabic RTL, with its own typography and layout, not a mirrored English page.
  • Your app bill is high and most apps replace simple features.
  • You plan to scale to Shopify Plus and need a clean foundation.

If you are unsure, launch on a configured premium theme and rebuild the pages that matter most later. It is cheaper than guessing wrong on a full custom build.

How we decide with clients

We look at three things: how many products and variants you have, how much of your brand is carried by layout, and what you pay in apps. If a refined premium theme covers the requirement, we say so and quote the AED 4,950 launch store. If it does not, we scope the custom build at AED 14,500 and show you the pages it changes.

Questions

It is worth it when your brand, catalogue or checkout flow cannot be served by a template, or when app costs and speed are hurting you. For a simple store, a configured premium theme is usually the better value.

Yes. Your products, orders and customers stay in Shopify, so only the storefront changes. Plan for design time, content mapping and testing.

Not by itself. Clean code and faster loading help, but rankings depend on content, structure and links. A custom theme just removes technical obstacles.

With us, you own the code, designs and accounts from the first payment. Confirm the same in writing with any agency you hire.
